Jay’s Handyman services

About Us

Jay’s Handyman Services started out of a minivan in 2006 just after my wife and I had our third child, and two years before, we moved to our current location in Kirtland, Ohio. I have been happily married to my beautiful wife Joelle for 27 years now. Together we have three children: Olivia (22), Lauren (21), and Jason (18). We also have three pets: two dogs, Jackson and piper, and a cat, Lucy.

I have been in business for eighteen years and have been doing this particular kind of work for well over thirty years. I had a rental property for quite some time and even flipped a couple houses which led to me getting my real estate license. I held that for about five years before I decided I would rather work on the houses instead of selling them. In the midst of all of this, I was working in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) full-time. And although I no longer work on HVAC equipment as a service, I still have a vast knowledge on the field.

The first job I ever had was a paper route. I delivered papers for The News Harold and The Telegraph. Occasionally, customers of mine would ask me to help with small jobs like trimming bushes, tearing out roofing and sheds, as well as mowing grass and raking leaves. I did anything I could do to earn a dollar.

From a young age, my dad taught me a lot about home repair and remodeling. He did everything himself, with me by his side from as early as I can remember. His work ethic and attention to detail is something I strive for each and every day. From there, my friend’s brother owned buildings in Willoughby, the town I grew up in, including both apartment and commercial rentals. Whenever someone would move out, he would call me in to clean, paint, fix, and prepare anything that was needed for a new tenant. The same guys also flipped houses and often talked me through how everything was done. They gave me books to read on the subject, in between jobs, and during lunch breaks, I never failed to soak up as much information as I could.

Once I turned 18, I started working for a HVAC company installing ductwork in new house construction along with furnaces and air-conditioning units in existing homes. I did that for fifteen years on top of my own rental home, flipping houses, and earning my real estate license.

I left the HVAC company after four years of having barely any work during the winter. I worked for a gentleman as a plumbing and HVAC technician for two years then in an apartment complex for one year all the while with everyone around me telling me a should go off on my own. And that’s exactly what I did sixteen years ago to create Jay’s Handyman Services.

Now comes me, little Jay. I am the originals Jays son, Jay. I have been working with my dad, coming on jobs with him, and learning the ins and outs of home remodeling and repair since I was 8 years old (I am now 18).

I have always enjoyed working with my hands and building things, and my dad has taught me so much in just that. I’ve always loved playing with Legos, building sand castles, and creating dirt tracks for my toy cars. Since I was young, my dad has dragged me along to teach me everything I need to know about home repair and remodeling, and I’ve loved every minute of it.

Now current day, I go to Auburn Career Center for construction so I can learn new methods of working, and all the modern day building codes to make sure that our work is above and beyond in quality. I also play the tuba in the Kirtland Hornet Marching Band. After I graduate, I plan on taking over my dads business and running it for as long as I can before hopefully handing it off to my own son.

Together, my father and I work like two peas in a pod in unison to ensure the best quality and greatest satisfaction of every customer, in every job we do.
